Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be for couples. Families can celebrate their love for each other as well. Of course we hope we do this every day, but picking out one day a year to highlight the love is a nice treat.

Showcasing your love can come in different forms and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Cut out or buy 14 hearts. Then write one thing you love about your child/spouse/partner/roommate in each heart. Every day from February 1st through the 14th, put one up on their bedroom door. They will love seeing all the things that you think make them special.

Surprise hand written notes are also a sweet gesture. It could be as simple as a post-it note in their lunch box/purse/wallet with a short message. If you have time to grab a nice card that could work too. Make sure to write a message of your own in there so your loved one knows you put some thought into it. If you have time, a love letter to your partner goes a long way. Write about the first time you met, or how you felt when you first kissed or even the most recent thing they did that made you smile. Again, it doesn’t have to be long. Even a surprise email message will make them smile.

Sweet treats can be expensive around Valentine’s Day so skip the chocolate shops and head to the supermarket. Buy strawberries and microwavable chocolate chips to create your own chocolate covered strawberries. You can even get white chocolate if that’s what your sweetheart prefers. Some sprinkles or shredded coconut might be a nice addition too. The kids might like chocolate covered Oreos or pretzels instead.

Don’t overthink this time of year. Any simple gesture, act of kindness or special effort will be appreciated. Showing your loved ones you care is what matters most…no matter how big or small you go.
